Northampton County was created in 1741 from Bertie County by the Colonial Assembly of North Carolina. The courthouse, built in 1858, is one of the few surviving examples of full Greek revival temple-form public buildings in the state. Samuel Calvert served as Superintendent of Public Buildings and Henry King Burgwyn is credited as the architect. The building still bears cracks from the Charleston earthquake of 1886. Despite its age, this courthouse remains the center of all DWI court proceedings in Northampton County today.

Northampton County has not yet moved to the eCourts digital system. DUI records are still kept on paper. To search for a DWI case, visit the Clerk of Superior Court at 102 West Jefferson Street in Jackson during business hours. Bring a valid photo ID. Staff can look up cases by name or case number.
